Mohandas K. Gandhi (1869-1948)
as a young lawyer in Natal

He lived in South Africa from 1893 to 1914.

Gandhi was invariably humble and witty in protesting against the honorific Mahatma meaning great of soul.

Ghandi and Mrs. Besant ultimately parted ways on the question of methods for gaining Indian Home Rule, but they preserved mutual respect and admiration. In retrospect many distinguished Indian leaders have acknowledged that her approach may have led to freedom earlier and with less strife. [N2 pp. 461-469]
